Kan Li was born in 2000 in Zhejiang, China. His artistic formation began at the Affiliated High School to China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, and he later graduated from the Architectural Association in London with a BA and an MArch.
His practice unfolds between aesthetic inquiry and spatial strategy, where visuality becomes an epistemological instrument. Alongside design and research, he has sustained a parallel engagement with editorial work across contemporary art and cultural communication. This experience that has sharpened his capacity to move between disciplinary registers, carrying complex ideas across audiences without flattening meanings.
At the core of this work lies a persistent inquiry: how the mode of perception delimits the scope of action. Anchored in architectural thinking, he works at the intersection of visual culture, technological systems, and scientific inquiry, examining how images, texts, measurement, data, and protocols shape what can be seen and acted upon.
Amidst the prevailing logic of market rationality and technological acceleration, the autonomy of design is often eroded by an inertia toward certainty and deliverable-oriented production. What interests him is how to work within these constraints, reviving the design process as an opportunity to reframe the problem and the designed outcome as a structure others can inherit and extend. Design, in this sense, is redefined as a generative device; its agency returns not as a claim of authorship, but as a capacity to reshape the conditions under which action occurs.
Over the past two years, he has worked closely with artists, scientists, researchers, and developers to turn dispersed material into knowledge that can circulate. His practice takes spatial analysis and visual articulation as its base, extending into design, writing, editing, moving image, and visual essay. Across academic research, public communication, and brand identity, he brings integrated narrative structure and visual coherence to projects that need a clear and substantive cultural voice.
